Underhill
The Fae and Beast-kin are supernatural creatures from another dimension, recognized as Underhill. Underhill is both more beautiful and more terrifying than the Earth realm and is different in almost every way possible, such as gravity, plant and animal life, the color spectrum, time, and even morality. Often adhering to rules and taboos that conflict with human nature and often contradict one another, this makes the Fae and Beast-kin rather unpredictable for most.
Fae have been traveling back and forth between Underhill and the Human realm for centuries, working with and living among the mortals in secrecy while Beast-kin were more secluded and secretive from the mortal realm. They come to Earth for many reasons, such as business, power, adventure, or even to escape persecution and the opportunity to begin a new life in a new world even if they have to return regularly.
The Strange: Realm of the Wilde
The strange is a.. well.. strange place. It is best thought of as an endless foggy expanse where the rules of reality as both man and fae know them break down into madness inducing paradox of impossibility—The only thing which exists in these endless depths are impossible entities known as .
Within the Strange bubbles float, containing entire worlds with their own internal regulated rules and unique denizens. These ‘bubbles’ are known formally as Domains and can be thought of as small islands of stability within the formless chaos. Smaller domains tend to be unstable, and eventually collapse. The distance between the major domains tends to be vast, and making your way between them with your mind and body intact is nearly impossible. Within our setting, the only major domain playable is Underhill, with only one stable minor domain currently ‘in orbit’ around it, so to speak.
Underhill (Major Domain):
-
Underhill can be thought of as the Wilde’s creative reinterpretation of Earth. It has a different geographic arrangement but shares its size, and basic atmospheric and thermal properties.
-
Underhill has no sun, nor moon. The sky merely grows brighter, then dims on a roughly 24 hour cycle.
-
Travel between Underhill and Earth is made possible through various interdimensional portals around the globe. Out of these portals power flows into a worldwide grid of energy known as the Ley Lines. The portals can only be intentionally located by Fae; the occasional (un)lucky mortal does sometimes stumble through one.
-
Underhill is currently ruled by an Unseelie and/or Seelie monarch. The two crowns are combined or split as the Wilde wills it and when one or neither have a ruler, The Minister of the Autumn Court presides.
Arcadia (Minor Domain):
-
Arcadia appears to be an endless starry expanse locked in a perpetual twilight, though it is actually only a spherical space roughly 21 km (13 miles) across.
-
It contains a stable breathable atmosphere and few floating islands which have growing plant life. Despite how paradoxical it seems these things are set rules of the domain, and so remain constant facts.
-
If you fall off the islands you eventually hit the bottom edge of the domain and cross back onto the top one, allowing you to land on an island.
-
-
Arcadia was created by the Wilde due a perceived need of the Fae for a place the Court of the Seasons could safely administer the Earthly territories. It is a neutral place, not in any race’s control nor Underhill’s senatorial government.
-
Arcadia is unique in that it is like a book. Each earthly territory gets a ‘page’ of the book. Each ‘page’ is isolated from the others, meaning every territorial court’s monarch rules from the same two thrones, yet never intrudes upon its counterparts.
-
You are automatically sent to the version of Arcadia for the territory you intend to join or be a part of.
-
-
Arcadia is patrolled by entities known as the Royal Guard. They are seemingly hollow suits of armor with strange powers to subdue troublemakers (or intruders) and throw them out.
Avalon (Minor Domain - LOST):
-
Avalon was crafted through a now lost spell by the legendary medieval witch Myrddin.
-
It was said to be as if someone had taken a copy of 14th century Ireland and placed it on an endless ocean.
-
Avalon was created to be a refuge for European witches during the rising inquisition.
-
No one has been able to access Avalon for over 300 years and no one knows if it is still existent or what occurred to its occupants.
